Betrayal

Betrayal is purposely hurting someone who has loved you.  Betrayal is a dull knife that cuts deep painful wounds.  The source of betrayal is jealousy.  It is based on the belief that cutting someone else down to size will somehow elevate the betrayer.  Those who betray their friends find no joy in the victories of others.  They fundamentally mistrust God and miss His goodness.

Betrayers always can find some fault in their friend to justify their actions.  Remember Judas had his reasons also.  Jesus had no faults.  He was and is love and yet He was betrayed nonetheless.

Although we cannot keep someone from betraying us, we can keep ourselves from becoming the betrayer of our friend.  Here are some things that will keep us from betraying our friend.  Thankfulness toward God:  we deserve no good thing but our Father in heaven gives abundant grace.  Be happy for the blessings that God gives others.  Hurting your friend will not cause God to bless you.

If there is something between you and your friend, Matthew 18 has the process prescribed by God to solve the problem.  Gossip is betrayal.  Jumping to step two or three in the process is gossip no matter how many ways we justify this action in our minds.

Don’t underestimate how big a blessing it is to have a faithful friend.  Read through Proverbs and look at the verses on friendship if you are tempted to betray your friend.  Short term pleasure or gain is no substitute for a lifelong friend.

Finally, what should our reaction be if we are wounded deeply by our friend?  We must ask God for His grace in order that we might forgive.  A definition of forgiveness that I heard recently might be helpful here.  Forgiveness is giving up on the idea that the past can be different.

God’s Love and Man’s Rebellion

One of the main themes of the Bible is man’s sinful rebellion against God and God’s redeeming love in reaching out to man.  God’s love is always associated with His sacrifice.  God’s love and man’s sin met at the cross. Continue reading

The Number One Problem Facing America Today

What is America’s number one problem today?  It is the fact that the majority of Christians have given their children over to be discipled by secular humanists.

There are a few lies which must be believed in order for this to happen.  Lie number one is education and making disciples are two different things.  They are one and the same.  Lie number two is knowledge is neutral.  All knowledge is taught with an underlying worldview.  Lie number three is God has not ordained a method of education.  He has ordained a method of education and it is for fathers to teach their children with a multi-generational view of faithfulness.  Lie number four is the Bible is one of many sources for truth.  It is truth and without error.  Lie number five is the Bible only speaks to questions of faith or the Church.  It speaks to all things including true science and history.  Lie number six is Jesus Christ is only Lord over the Church.  He is Lord over all three spheres of government; family, church, and civil.  And finally lie number seven is there are no negative consequences for believing and acting on lies number one through six. Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness

Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is a phrase found at the beginning of our country’s founding document, the Declaration of Independence.  These are rights that our founders recognized came from our Creator.  This idea of these three rights coming from our Creator has its source in Genesis 1:26-28.  This passage of scripture is known as the dominion mandate. The Power of the Word of God

This evening during our family worship time one of the topics we talked about was the power of the Word of God.  There were two different passages of scripture that I used to demonstrate this power.  The first passage was Job 41 which is a description of Leviathan.  Although Leviathan may have been some type of dinosaur or sea serpent, it is most assuredly a description of the devil.  Martin Luther used verse 33 in his song, A Mighty Fortress Is Our God to describe our enemy.  I have placed the second half of the chapter below. God’s Words Written On Our Hearts

Today I preached on Deuteronomy 6:1-15.  My message was about a multi-generational vision for making disciples.  Part of this vision is to have God’s words written on our hearts.  How do God’s words go from stone tablets or written pages to our hearts?  Verses 7 – 9 give three commands which when we obey the words of God are written on our hearts.

The first is to teach our children God’s words and then grab their hand and help them to live it out.  This cannot be achieved by Sunday School teachers or youth group leaders.  Parents, specifically fathers, must teach their children the scriptures.  In the context of the parent child relationship is where a double blessing occurs and the words of God are written on both the parent’s and child’s heart.  Fathers are biblically illiterate and children are leaving the Church in alarming numbers because the practice of family worship has almost been abandoned in the America.  The Church’s responsibility is to equip the saints (fathers) but not to do the work for them in a Church welfare program.

The second command is given in verse 8 for writing the words of God on our hearts.  The Pharisees had their phylacteries as an outward expression of this command but I believe the Lord had a broader meaning in mind, a spiritual meaning.  What this verse teaches is that our actions and our worldview (lens which we interpret the world) should be governed by God’s words.  As we constantly ask the question, “What do the scriptures say about this?” God’s words are written on our hearts by constant reinforcement.

The final command for writing the words of God on our hearts is found in verse 9.  It pictures a home that engages all the senses for the scriptures.  You see scriptures framed in pictures.  You hear gospel songs playing.  You even smell and taste a Sunday dinner that you remember as part of family worship.  A home like this is a place where disciples of Jesus Christ can return to and find healing, cleansing, forgiveness, and a very real faith.  True repentance happens in a home like this because God’s words are called into remembrance.  They are written on the heart.

Youth Groups – A Bible Example

The modern age segregated youth group model of has a biblical example.  It is found in 2 Kings 2:23-25.  This passage of scripture speaks of Elisha the prophet.

2 Kings 2:23-25

King James Version (KJV)

23 And he went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head.

24 And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the Lord. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

25 And he went from thence to mount Carmel, and from thence he returned to Samaria.

The point of this passage of scripture is summarized below:

Proverbs 22:15

King James Version (KJV)

15 Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

Foolishness reigns when large groups of young people are led or entertained by people just a few years older and the results are just as tragic as the example in 2 Kings above.

The biblical model for successfully raising disciples for the Lord Jesus Christ has a few main parts:  one is for parents (fathers taking the lead) to teach their children the words of God and to give their children a biblical worldview or lens which to interpret the issues of life;  two, the biblical model for discipling the next generation must include biblically qualified elders teaching the whole counsel of God; and three, the older generation must invest in the younger generation, imparting wisdom where there is good fruit.

As you finish reading this post, please take the time to read 1 Kings 12:6-11.

Matthew 24 – The question of when.

I just finished updating a teaching page in our Bible Prophecy section which considers a difficult passage of scripture and when it will be fulfilled.  The link is below.  Look for Benita and I to post more frequently again as we are moving through some trying times.

Matthew 24 – The question of when

In the next few weeks, I want to add a few more pages to our O.T. Survey I and consider some other subjects such as making disciples.

KJV, Cross References, and Truth

One thing I have said for a few years now regarding the KJV and other bible translations is that other translations of the bible in English remove the word cross references and destroy truth that is revealed in the KJV.  While there are countless examples of this phenomena, I thought I would give one example on this post. The Original Greek

One phrase you will hear many preachers say today is, “the original Greek says” and then they will go on to tell you why your English bible could or should be translated in a different way.  This technique which I will call the Greek game is used to support some theological position which the English just will not support.
