Youth Groups – A Bible Example

The modern age segregated youth group model of has a biblical example.  It is found in 2 Kings 2:23-25.  This passage of scripture speaks of Elisha the prophet.

2 Kings 2:23-25

King James Version (KJV)

23 And he went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head.

24 And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the Lord. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

25 And he went from thence to mount Carmel, and from thence he returned to Samaria.

The point of this passage of scripture is summarized below:

Proverbs 22:15

King James Version (KJV)

15 Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

Foolishness reigns when large groups of young people are led or entertained by people just a few years older and the results are just as tragic as the example in 2 Kings above.

The biblical model for successfully raising disciples for the Lord Jesus Christ has a few main parts:  one is for parents (fathers taking the lead) to teach their children the words of God and to give their children a biblical worldview or lens which to interpret the issues of life;  two, the biblical model for discipling the next generation must include biblically qualified elders teaching the whole counsel of God; and three, the older generation must invest in the younger generation, imparting wisdom where there is good fruit.

As you finish reading this post, please take the time to read 1 Kings 12:6-11.
